What do you make? How did you get into it?
I make envelopes and cards with hand-drawn designs. It started out with my love for doodling, back in high school. In 2011, Details Ink only offered those stationery sets but, I’m happy to say that we’ve branched out a bit, incorporated some graphics into the hand drawn works and now we have notebooks too! 🙂
Are you a full-time crafter? If not, what is your day job?
No, I’m actually a third year BS Architecture student. There are two other people on the Details Ink team though. One is an Interior Design student and the other has just decided to become a full time performer!
What motivates you in pursuing this business?
This is actually a very heavy question for me, because we’ve experienced a whole lot of stress coming up with new stuff. But, I always always always try to stay grounded on my WHY – on the reasons I started this in the first place. No, it wasn’t for money. No, it wasn’t even for other people.
It started out of pure love for doodling, for adding depth to simple elements, for seeing the “something more” in everything, for expressing myself, for constantly finding and creating sources of inspiration, and for using art as a means of channeling my emotions. It started as an outlet. A super duper personal outlet.
I believe that art can make you feel things and it can HELP you feel things. A quote can change the way you see things. A picture can trigger memories, ideas, and emotions. A powerful notebook cover will make you want to use it for all your big life stuff and a well-designed card will make you want to express and share love & gratitude to someone just because.
What are some of the challenges of maintaining a craft business?
– Balancing your business and school/work
– Running operations while doing architectural plates
– Promoting your products huhuhu
– For me, it’s getting people to take you seriously even if you look 14 haha!
– Constantly coming up with new ideas for doodles and inspirational art
– Battling the lazy bug in order to finish commissions by the deadline
– Maintaining confidence when sales are slow and trying to stay grounded on your non-monetary reason for going on 🙂
There are many others but, those are a few big challenges! Haha.
What’s your most recent craft business milestone?
Well, we launched our notebooks at the Carousel Caravan at UP Town last weekend! Really good feedback. <3
What is your favorite lesson in your experience of your business?
I guess the best thing I learned from all this is… the importance of having a foundation. One thing I made clear when we became a team was that I will never allow this “business” to money-driven. We needed to have a bigger cause. And even if we’re still trying to put all our goals and dreams and our advocacy into words, it excites me knowing that we could use this as a platform… we can actually share a good message to our new followers. We can actually make an impact with our products! 🙂
I like thinking about it that way. More growth = more impact/ more happy people. Haha. 🙂 Whenever people say anything involving my designs or our product inspiring them or making them happy… whenever people say something like “I received a super nice letter on a super cute card!!!”… or “wow this notebook’s gonna make me super productive”… I get happy. 🙂
It takes me a step closer towards the discovery of my personal “why” – and once again, I believe in the importance of knowing that.
Um, if you were a craft tool, what would you be? And why?
I would like to be the Heat Embosser Tool from Paper Source because I love it so much right now!!!! <3
What can we expect to see from you guys at the upcoming Maker’s Market?
Of course, there’s our old collection of pure-hand-drawn-doodle envelopes and note cards. There are the new stuff – the products of our reINnovation. New envelope and card collection! New notebook collections! And lots of doodled giveaways <3
